The Divine Justice is as much a gift of God’s Love as is the Divine Mercy.
We must entrust ourselves to both when our Heavenly Father chooses to give them.
In the 18th century, St. Alphonsus Liguori wrote, among his many writings, a work entitled Nine Discourses for Times of Calamities. Through this excellent treatise, the Saint has preserved the teachings on the role of Divine Justice in our sanctification which future generations, our own in particular, would come to forget and even deny.
In the early 20th century, the Holy Mother of God would appear at Fatima to present these same teachings in the form of a warning to the world and to the Church: sin merits for us God’s punishment and, unless we are converted back to Him through much prayer and penance, this punishment will be administered. St. Alphonsus and Our Lady of Fatima both declare: if we do not properly turn to the Divine Mercy, with prayer and fasting, we will require the Divine Justice to correct our waywardness.
God Will Have Us Holy is the modern title given to this excellent series of admonitions from a Saint who received the most abundant praise from Popes and Bishops across the world for his gift of teaching and the exemplary holiness of his life. One thing that St. Alphonsus took seriously in his own life, and which he conveyed to the many whom he converted by his preaching, is that we must leave no room for sin in our souls.
God Will Have Us Holy – a new Book and a Truth – and it is left to us to cooperate with this calling. God’s desire for our salvation is so intense that He will spare nothing in the work of our Redemption and sanctification. Proof of this is given to the whole world in the Incarnation, Passion, and Death of His Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. His sufferings, an act of the Divine Justice through which Divine Mercy was offered to the world, merited salvation for all who accept and cooperate with Him.
Suffering, therefore, is a redemptive and medicinal work which God often permits, and sends, to draw us back to His Mercy if we have strayed, and to strip us of unhealthy attachments to this world if we have grown cold in our love for Him. For those who wish to be Saints, it is an indispensable element of the Christian life.
In this book, the reader will learn the answer to these and many other critical questions:
- What does Our Lord Jesus Christ say about punishments, in this life, for the sins we commit?
- Does sin really anger God, is He indifferent, or does He simply “look the other way”?
- In what ways does God punish and chastise in this life?
- If it is the inclination of Almighty God to pardon rather than to punish – why, then, does He chastise sinners?
- Is it true that, “If we remember our sins, God will forget them”?
- If a man hopes in the mercy of God, must he still fear God’s justice?
- Is it true that the prophet Isaiah said, “Punishment is a work contrary to the heart of God”?
Remember: St. Alphonsus Liguori is a Doctor of the Church for a reason!
Take up this book and let the Divine Truths deepen your understanding of the Heart of Our Lord, and re-inspire your devotion to a pure and abiding holiness and love for God!
