For this introductory article about The Cassock, Slaying Dragons Press presents the following endorsements:

In his book, “The Cassock,” Fr. Carney provides the Church with a clear and valuable explanation of the importance and significance of the cassock which, as a sacramental, is a visible witness and a sign of consecration to Christ in a world adrift from God. It is also a reminder to the priest of who he is and what he is to be about. This book helps us to renew our faith that, through the priestly ministry and its visible signs and operations, Christ continues passing again through the world, renewing the sacred bonds of love between the Heart of God and the hearts of men. + Athanasius Schneider, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Saint Mary in Astana

Unfamiliar with the cassock as a youth, when I became a seminarian, I, like so many others, initially rejected it. I have come to understand my mistake. The cassock is a symbol of commitment to Christ rather than to the world and, as such, it is much more than just a garment. Let us embrace the cassock as an opportunity to literally wear our faith in Christ on our sleeve: the five buttons representing His wounds, and all the rest. Fr. Carney’s excellent presentation in his book, “The Cassock,” will aid us in doing just that. + Joseph E. Strickland, Bishop emeritus of Tyler, TX

I am so glad that my good friend Fr Carney has written about the cassock in a time when it has been almost forgotten. After reading this, it’ll be time to appreciate it and wear it again. Fr. Jeffrey Jambon, Chaplain of the Benedictine of Mary Queen of Apostles, Evansville, Indiana.

The cassock is a prescribed vestment of charity. Fr. Carney inspires priests and seminarians to rediscover the connection between their interior life and the soutane. Fr. Andre Metrejean, Diocese of Lafayette
